With a focus on clearing our oceans from plastic pollution, Odyssey Innovation was founded by Rob Thompson when he started a group of volunteer divers to retrieve marine plastics as well as ghost gear from the sea back in 2014. He wanted to tackle the issues surrounding the collection and disposal of plastics around the coasts of Cornwall.
From the waste collected, Rob assembled the gathered plastics into kayaks, which Odyssey now sells online and are used in their 'Paddle for Plastic' campaign which our head designer Tab created the logo for. The kayaks would then be used to retrieve further plastics from the sea and would be given back to the communities that supported them through sponsorship.
Beginning with the consultation phase, we discussed how we could create a site to meet Odyssey's goals and where the current website was failing.
We initially suggested amending their current site to improve page speed and performance, but due to Wix's controls over their code, we decided it would be best to craft a new site that would improve the overall user journey and show off the brand at it's very best.
We came up with two solutions that would have the very best experience and visuals to give the brand opportunities to thrive and become the website it deserves to be.
We proposed an 'Essentials' bespoke build with a revised sitemap to greatly reduce the traffic drop-off from visitors we were seeing on the current site and implement an e-commerce store for the kayaks later on.
We also offered our complete 'Bespoke' package consisting of a full online shop but the flexibility to create the most suitable user journey for their store.
From collaborating with Odyssey, we decided to combine both packages to craft an 'Essential' site with Shopify e-commerce functionality. This meant that the products page would smoothly introduce a whole audience to Odyssey Innovation and provide a platform for sharing updates and regular content.
After this was decided we moved onto crafting a sitemap and wireframes to structure the key components and how the site would flow. We also determined the functionality of the site listing all the essential elements that would be built and allow visitors to have a user friendly experience whilst learning about the brand.
